Ear infections are much common among babies that often result in sleeplessness during nights. These infections cause pain in ear due to which your baby can’t sleep. Eustachian tube is present inside the middle ear that connects with the throat for equalizing pressure. The throat and nose provides a wet breeding area for bacteria. The Eustachian tube of a baby is short, horizontal and wide and the germs can easily travel through it. The fluid captured in the middle ear works as a means to help germs grow. Hence, ear infections are much common among babies.
It is essential to properly treat these infections. Hearing of your baby relies on proper vibrations of ear drum and structures of middle ear. It must be kept in mind that recurrent infections can harm the ear drum whereas the accumulated fluid moistens vibrations that inhibits hearing. Most of the moderate or mild ear infections do not require antibiotic to heal completely. Even the doctors do not instantly prescribe antibiotics for babies and they prefer waiting 2-3 days for their self recovery. Sometimes, ear-tugging is not a sign of ear infection. It may be due to ache from teething or may be your baby is just exploring his/her ears and loves to pull them. Make sure your baby is also suffering from cold along with running nose or eyes. Do consult your doctor if the symptoms of ear infection continue for more than 3 days.

- Keep allergens away: Irritants can accumulate fluid in the middle ear and nasal passages. Keep fuzzy things, real animals and stuffed toys away while your baby is sleeping. Plus, do not smoke around baby.
